Walking the National Mall

Early this morning (too early!), we loaded up the buses and crossed the Potomac. As we made our way into the heart of the Federal City, national landmarks sprang up on every side. Our first stop was the Capitol, where Senator Mike Lee's interns, friendly faces from home, led us on a tour of the building's chambers and monuments. We saw (among other things) the star that marks the very center of D.C.; burn marks from the War of 1812 marring an exterior wall; and the acoustical aberration in the old Senate chamber that enabled John Quincy Adams to listen in on the whispered conferences of the opposing party.

After leaving the Capitol, we broke into excursion groups to
wander the Smithsonian and the National Mall.
